Austin was the first Texas-born child in his family, growing up in Texarkana, Texas. He graduated with honors from the University of Texas, Austin (UT Austin), with a bachelor's degree in English literature and a certificate in pre-medical studies. During his time at UT Austin, he worked as a peer tutor and mentor for upper-division undergraduate biology courses. Additionally, he served as the president of the Senate of College Councils, focusing on curriculum structure and academic policy.
Following graduation, Austin was a teacher in Houston for high school students, primarily teaching English and English Pre-AP. During this time, he successfully taught 180 students a year, and was awarded Beginning Teacher of the Year in 2019. He then matriculated to the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine as part of their inaugural class. In medical school, he served as a teaching assistant for multiple courses in preclinical studies. He also served as a tutor for his fellow medical school colleagues for preclinical courses and the Shelf/COMAT exams. Despite this additional work, he received honors in nearly all clinical rotations. He passed both Step 1 and COMLEX 1, and scored a 261 on his Step 2 CK exam as well as a 690 on his COMLEX 2 CE exam.
Austin has been dedicated to mentorship, teaching, and education for over eight years and plans to continue this work throughout residency. He understands how difficult exams can feel, but strongly believes that each student is capable of success when committed to achieving their goals. To Austin, tutoring is a rewarding process in which everyone can learn and build strong relationships.
Austin is a hopeful applicant for an emergency medicine residency. He enjoys creative writing, spending time with his chihuahua Gigi, and biking around the city.
