Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Marie attended Washington University in Saint Louis, where she studied abroad in France on scholarship before graduating with honors with a bachelor’s in French and in Italian. While there, she worked with Washington University’s Institute for Public Health, presenting and publishing research on medical decision making and on patient-physician communication. Her award-winning honors thesis tied together her interests in medicine and in humanities with a study of how French Renaissance literature portrayed lived patient experience. After graduating, she spent one semester working full-time in public health research prior to matriculating to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Since starting medical school, Marie has found a passion for mentoring, serving as a student affiliate advisor, a surgical interest group leader, and a patient health educator at Vanderbilt’s student-staffed free clinic. Her surgery research in medical school has concentrated on implantation ischemia in cardiac transplantation. In addition, she spent a year between her third year and her fourth year researching a more specific method for surveying medical student burnout. A fervent proponent of finding wellness while studying, Marie has a strong interest in medical education and a strong investment in her students’ success.

Marie is planning to apply to surgery this summer. On her time off, you can find her reading, writing, running, or traveling with her husband.
