Dr. Matthew Neil has been a consultant of academic writing in various institutional settings for over eight years. He earned his bachelor of music in jazz studies from Temple University, and then his PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Riverside. While at UCR, he spent his summers reviewing dozens of personal statements for fellowship applications. In this role, he grew to enjoy helping students express their academic journeys in writing (and then seeing them rewarded with funding!).
In his last role as the assistant director of a writing center at a private university in California, Matt was a go-to advisor for undergraduate students seeking feedback on their applications to graduate school. Currently, Matt works for an online university as a dissertation proofreader, where he is the last line of defense to spot pesky errors like missing commas, improper capitalization, and incorrect subject-verb agreement.
Fun Fact
In his spare time, Matt likes to transcribe video game tunes into a jazz lead sheet format and then play them on piano. His favorites are from Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Animal Crossing.
