Tom is a native of central New Jersey and graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. As an undergraduate, he studied aortic aneurysm biomechanics, led musical therapy and inpatient delirium prevention programs at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and was a peer tutor for chemistry and math classes.
At UCSF, Tom has held positions as a tutor and near-peer mentor for high school, college, and medical students. He is a senior director for Camp Cardiac, a non-profit summer program run at 35 medical schools that teaches high school students about careers in medicine. He was a member of the Step 1 working committee that oversaw major changes to the school’s approach to USMLE exams.
In addition to teaching, Tom was a Clinical and Translational Research Fellow in the UCSF Department of Surgery and has received multiple extramural scholarships to support his research. His academic interests are in development of novel therapeutics to treat aneurysmal and lower extremity vascular disease. Tom will be staying at UCSF for his residency in general surgery, starting summer 2019. Tom firmly believes that with the proper preparation, a solid work ethic, and a little bit of guidance every student has the potential to perform well on their exams during medical school.
