    FAQ About Medical Schools in California

    California medical schools will require an AMCAS or AACOMAS medical school application. Your application will include your GPA, MCAT score, prerequisite coursework, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and secondary essays. Each school may have slightly different requirements, If you know you are applying at a specific California medical school, check with the school for their admissions requirements.

    There is a regional campus of the University of California San Francisco in Fresno that has a network of affiliated partners to carry out training and patient care. An hour away from Fresno you’ll find the California Health Sciences University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Clovis.

    The University of California San Francisco is a prominent institution in the Bay Area, known for its outstanding faculty and comprehensive medical programs.

    There are two medical schools in the city of Los Angeles, the University of California Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine and  Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. In Los Angeles county, you’ll also find Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine and Western University of Health Sciences.

    The only medical school in San Diego is UC San Diego School of Medicine.

    There is not currently a medical school in Antioch, CA.

    The newest medical school in California is the University of California, Merced, which began enrolling students in in 2023.

    California has some of the best medical schools for Psychiatry in the country. The University of California San Francisco, the University of California Los Angeles, and Stanford University are amongst the highest ranking schools in the country for this field.

    Sacramento is home to UC Davis School of Medicine and in neighboring city, Elk Grove, you can find California Northstate University College of Medicine.

    California medical schools are all very competitive. Osteopathic medical schools like Touro University have higher acceptance rates in general.
