    Maya was raised in San Jose, California. She graduated in the top five percent of her undergraduate class at the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in public health. During her time at UC Berkeley, Maya participated in legislative advocacy at both the state and national level and public health research in her ancestral homeland of Tamil Nadu, India. As a result, Maya became passionate about pursuing a systems-based approach to medicine and compassionately advocating for underserved populations. After graduating, Maya worked at a health technology company prior to matriculating to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

    In medical school, Maya taught students from different educational backgrounds. She served as a prestigious Schweitzer fellow, where she developed and led a re-entry program that taught over 100 inmates how to secure welfare resources from the Harris County Jail. Through this project, she built long-standing relationships, explored the unique challenges incarcerated populations face, and helped to improve their health literacy. She has also taught medical students on a variety of topics from the intricacies of head and neck anatomy to clerkship exam preparation.

    Currently, Maya is an MD/MBA student with a keen interest in medical school education. Maya understands how valuable mentorship can be and has helped mentor a spectrum of students in high school, college, and medical school. She earned a 260+ on Step 2 CK. Moving forward, Maya hopes to pursue a career in interventional cardiology and is passionate about value-based care, physician advocacy in legislative environments, and healthcare administration. She hopes to empower her students and give them the confidence to achieve their medical school dreams.

    Maya has a second degree black belt in karate!
